Perfect liquid foundations for a photoshoot
Not sure which foundations look good in camera? Here are few of my favourites that always photograph well.
Let’s be honest—choosing the right foundation for professional photos can be overwhelming. You want your skin to look flawless and radiant, but never cakey or washed out. As a portrait and branding photographer (and someone who’s seen a lot of different makeup on camera!), I know just how much difference the right base can make. Whether you prefer to do your own makeup or have it done professionally, this guide will help you choose foundations that perform beautifully in front of the lens.
Here is my list…
Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation
A true classic and still unbeatable for many. This one isn’t the “Light” version—it’s the full Double Wear, and here’s why: It offers amazing coverage, controls shine, and never looks flat or mask-like in photos. It sets beautifully, lasts all day, and is a go-to for so many makeup artists on photo shoots. Pro tip: Blend quickly and don’t over-apply for a natural, polished finish.
W7 Legend Foundation
This one’s a total game changer if you want the look of Double Wear without the price tag. The W7 Legend Foundation has quickly become my secret weapon—it costs under £6, gives medium-full coverage, and has a more satin (less matte) finish than its famous counterpart. It photographs just as beautifully, feels lightweight, and I actually prefer how skin-like it looks under studio lights.
Airbrush Makeup (Professional Application)
If you’re booking a makeup artist for your shoot, ask about airbrush foundation. This isn’t a single product but a technique: the makeup is sprayed on in a fine mist, creating an ultra-smooth, long-wearing, flawless finish. It photographs incredibly well, blurs imperfections, and never looks cakey. Most pro MUA’s carry silicone-based airbrush options (like Temptu or Dinair) for this reason. If you want skin that looks “filtered” in real life and on camera, this is the ultimate treat.
MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15
This is another go-to in the pro world. Studio Fix Fluid offers a natural matte finish, serious staying power, and is available in a huge range of shades. It looks great under all lighting, controls shine, and blends well, making it a solid pick for anyone wanting a classic, polished look in photos—especially if you have oilier skin.
NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation
A modern classic among makeup artists, NARS Natural Radiant offers full but natural-looking coverage with a slight radiance. It doesn’t create flashback (that ghostly white cast in flash photos) and holds up beautifully under hot studio lights. It’s ideal for all skin types and blends seamlessly—skin still looks like skin, just more even and glowing.
Milani Conceal 2 in 1
Really good value for money (about £11 to £14 per bottle, depending on the shop). I’m normally not a fan of full coverage foundations, but this one does not create a mask effect at all. It has a lovely velvet finish, covering all imperfections well and a long-lasting power. It can be used as a sheer to medium coverage if blended with moisturiser. Good selection of shades. You can buy Milani foundation here.
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
This is a cult favourite for red carpet, editorial, and wedding photography. It’s loved for its weightless texture and ability to even out the complexion without ever looking heavy. Luminous Silk leaves a soft, lit-from-within glow, photographs like a dream, and is forgiving on texture or mature skin. Yes, it’s a splurge, but it really is worth it if you want that high-end, “my skin but better” look.
A Few Final Tips
- Always test your foundation in natural daylight (and, if possible, take a selfie with your phone using flash!) to check for flashback or oxidising.
- Less is more—you want your skin to look like skin, not a mask. Build up coverage only where needed and use concealer for targeted spots.
- Powder sparingly. A light dusting will set everything without flattening your features.
