Fearless Dot: Portraits as a Celebration of Transitions and New Beginnings
There are moments in life when everything shifts. Sometimes it’s planned—retirement, career changes, children leaving home. Other times, it arrives uninvited: loss, health challenges, unexpected transitions. What remains constant is that youare still here—still growing, still evolving, still becoming.
Dot’s portrait experience is a powerful example of what it means to honour yourself in those moments of change. She didn’t come just for glamour. She didn’t come for vanity. She came because she wanted to mark a turning point in her life, to celebrate who she is now, and to embrace the journey ahead.
Like many women, Dot had spent years feeling more comfortable behind the scenes. The idea of stepping in front of the camera, with all the focus on her, felt new and a little daunting. But Dot was ready for a change—she wanted to experience something joyful and stretch her comfort zone. In her words, “Life’s too short not to do things that make you feel good.”
For many of my clients in Ayrshire, Glasgow, and across Scotland, personal portraits aren’t just photographs. They are mile-markers. They are an act of courage and visibility. They are a way of saying: I matter. My story matters. My next chapter is worth celebrating.
It was such an honour to witness Dot’s transformation—from a little nervous at first, to smiling and genuinely embracing herself, just as she is. “I wish more women my age would do this,” Dot said. “It’s a wonderful boost for your confidence.”
Dot’s journey is a reminder that every chapter of life deserves to be celebrated. There’s no age limit for feeling good in your own skin, and no wrong time to step forward and say, “This is me, and I am proud.”

Why Portraits Matter During Life’s Transitions
When life changes, our sense of identity often shifts with it. We might leave behind roles that once defined us—mother, wife, professional—and wonder who we are beyond them. Portraits can be a grounding, empowering way to reconnect with yourself.
- They help you see yourself with fresh eyes, especially after loss, retirement, or personal transformation.
- They capture the strength, softness, and authenticity that sometimes we forget to notice in ourselves.
- They create a visual reminder that new beginnings are possible at any stage of life.
Dot’s story is a reminder that portraits can be more than a photograph—they can be part of a healing process, a declaration of self-worth, and a celebration of what’s still to come.
Dot’s story
I have been married 41 years have 3 sons and have worked throughout bringing them up as a employer having had 3 salons. 2 years ago I sold my last salon to embark on a childhood dream and train as cabin crew, although I haven’t done my first flight I have been invited back this year so at the age of 61 I hopefully will achieve my ambition!

What did you want most out of life?
Just to be happy and never give up
What do you love most about yourself?
I love that I still am young at heart and do not feel my age
What else do you want to experience (or experience more of)?
I want to experience/see more of the world and learn more about other cultures. Adventures rather than holiday.
I love that you decided to follow your childhood dream after years of running a very successful business. What made you take the big step and follow your heart?
A chance remark saying I’ve always wanted to be an ‘air hostess’ was the key that unlocked the door. The children were now adults, and the family encouraged me to apply, but who would want someone as crew at my age!? I was astounded to find I was successful after each round of the application process. I finished my training in 2020 and got my ‘Wings’ but due to Covid I’m not fully fledged just yet.
What would you say to any people who are hesitant to follow their heart and pursue their dreams
To anyone hesitant I would say ‘Go for it’ Don’t miss the opportunity if it comes your way and you have the support, you only have one life.

If you had the power to change 3 things in the world, what would they be?
Greed. Acceptance of each other. People to love more.
What advice would you give to your 20 year old self?
You need to make mistakes to learn for the future
Who inspires and motivates you?
The Queen inspires me! If she can do what she does at 95, and if your fit enough and have good health, then why can’t I?
Why were the photographs important to you now?
Having a photo session was important to capture a image that me and my family would be proud of. To feel good about who me.
How did you feel seeing your finished portraits?
Wow!! the portraits are amazing, It was so difficult my husband and I to choose the the ones to keep.

Speaking to You, My Dream Client
Dot’s words might feel familiar. Perhaps you’ve also reached a season of life where you’re ready to stop hiding and start living more fully. Perhaps you’ve felt invisible, overlooked, or uncertain—and now you’re ready to see yourself clearly again.
If you’re going through a transition—whether it’s personal, professional, or spiritual—personal portraits can be a way to mark this turning point. They’re not about perfection. They’re about presence. They’re not about looking younger. They’re about looking like you, with all the wisdom and depth you’ve earned.
This is for:
- The woman stepping into a new chapter after loss or change.
- The leader redefining her identity beyond her career.
- The creative soul discovering new passions and new ways of expressing herself.
- The woman who wants a tangible reminder that she is more than the roles she plays.
Portraits as a Bridge to the Future
What I love most about working with women like Dot is the way portraits become more than images. They become bridges—connecting who you’ve been with who you’re becoming. Clients often tell me that seeing their portraits helps them shift how they feel about themselves, giving them permission to step into opportunities with more confidence.
For some, it sparks creativity. For others, it inspires them to show up more visibly in their business or community. For many, it’s simply about finally seeing themselves with kindness and pride.
That’s the true gift of empowering women’s portraits in Ayrshire, Glasgow, and Scotland—they’re not just beautiful images. They’re tools for transformation, healing, and self-expression.
