Traditional branding asks: Who are they and what do they want to see? Soul-led branding asks: Who are you and how can your truth be seen and felt? In my work as a portrait & branding photographer, the planning is real—images, wardrobe, business goals. But the magic lives in the unexpected. During a session there is always a moment—a subtle shift—when the mask drops. I see it. They feel it. That’s when the imagery stops being “photo of a professional” and becomes visual proof of presence. It isn’t about posing perfectly. It’s about becoming visible at the soul-level—so that your ideal clients feel you before they meet you.
From Performance to Presence
One of my clients is a professional violinist. Her earlier branding photos were technically solid—but they missed something deeper. They didn’t convey the energy of what people feel when she is on stage, immersed in her music. During our pre-session video consultation I asked her to bring her violin and play for me. I wasn’t there in the studio. I was watching her channel her full self through that music, listening to how her audience must absorb her presence. And in that moment I knew how to frame her visibly. At the session she was guarded at first: aware of the camera, presentational. But as we moved through the session she relaxed, the moment came, and she let the music inform her pose, her gaze, her stillness. The result wasn’t just “a nice portrait” but a series of images that carried the same depth people feel when she plays. Those were her best portraits. This is the difference: from performance (the professional mask) to presence (your truth becoming visible).

The Process: Where Intuition Meets Intention
Every portrait session begins with structure: a consultation about business direction, audience, styling, location. But what distinguishes the work is the moment of co-creation. I ask questions: “What are you shifting in your business? What new direction are you stepping into? Who are you becoming?” Then during the session I remain open. I watch how they move. I watch how they relax. I recognise when the energy changes and I shift the session in that moment. Maybe the wardrobe changes. Maybe we pause and let them engage in something that triggers their truth. Maybe we ask them to create rather than pose. And that’s what happened with my violinist client: the music became the catalyst for truth. It’s these intuitive strokes, layered over the strategic planning, that elevate the work from “good portraits” to “transformational brand images”.
