Ali came to me as part of my 40 Over 40 Portrait Experience campaign, sharing that she felt like she had lost a part of herself along life’s journey. She wanted this session to reconnect with that part of her, to rediscover who she truly is beneath the roles, responsibilities, and chapters that have shaped her story.
About halfway through our session, something magical happened. There was a moment—one I’ll never forget—when I saw her. The real Ali. Not the Ali she thought she had to be, not the one hidden beneath layers of doubt or self-consciousness, but the authentic, unapologetic woman she always was deep down.
I instinctively knew what she needed to see in her photographs that day, and I showed her an image on the back of the camera. I’ll never forget how her energy shifted in that instant. It wasn’t just about seeing a picture; it was about feeling seen.
From that moment on, she wasn’t trying to pose or perform. She was simply herself—comfortable, radiant, and fully alive. At the end of the session, she said: “I finally feel like myself for the first time in a long time.”
